RABIES reported in Wilmington!!!
A number of new cases of rabies as of April 22have been reported in the city of WIlmngton. While these are at this time confined to racoons, several domestic animals have been exposed and at least one dog has been euthanized because it was not current on vaccines. If your cat is not cutrrent on its rabies vaccine, we urge you to get the rabies booster for your cat as soon as possible. Keep the cat indoors until the booster can be administered.
Public Health Regulations concerning rabies exposure:
-Rabies virus is found in the saliva of animals for a few days prior to signs of ilness or death. If you have been bitten by a healthy, owned dog, cat or ferret who has a current rabies vaccine, the animal should be confined and observed for 10 days. If any sign of illness occurs during those 10 days, call your veterinarian and the local public health department imediately. If a stray dog, cat or ferret or any wildlife should bite you, it is recommended to euthanize the animal and have the head submitted for rabies examinaiton.
-If your dog, cat or ferret that is currently vaccinated is bitten by a potentially rabid animal, it should be revaccinated immediately and placed under in-house observation for 45 days. Any illness should be reported at once to your veterinarian and the local health department. If signs suggestive of rabies develop, the animal will be euthanized and the head shipped for testing.
-Unvaccinated dogs, cats and ferrets exposed to a rabid animal should be either 1. euthanized immediately or 2. placed in strict isolation for 6 months. The animal can be vaccinated with rabies vaccine upon entry into isolatio or one month prior to release from isolation. We have no biologics licensed for post-exposure prophylaxis of previously unvaccinated domestic animals. Evidence exists that vaccine alone will not will not reliably prevent the disease in these animals.
-Animals with expired vaccines exposed to potentially rabid animals will be considered on a case to case basis.
